These are Danielle’s slippers, which I gave her as a small gift when she arrived at my house two weeks ago and she left behind when she departed today. They are a token of her promise to return in the future.

For two weeks we were barely apart. Today I came back from work to an empty house and saw these where she left them in my living room.

We shouldn’t measure our affections solely by the way people make us feel when they are present; just as important is how they make us feel when they are absent.

I miss her.

Oh, what’s this? Just me and Danielle thanking Bob Mould for playing an amazingly brilliant set in London tonight. No big deal. I wasn’t pathetically star-struck or anything.

With no backing band (just himself and an acoustic or electric guitar), he stormed through about 20 songs drawn from his solo work, Sugar, and Hüsker Dü back catalogs. It was a superb gig, partly because the venue (the Bloomsbury Ballroom in Camden) was small and intimate, but mostly because he was on brilliant form, laughing and joking with the crowd between songs and generally enjoying himself.

He’s playing in Brighton on Wednesday, if anyone can get to that gig, and he mentioned tonight that this will probably be his last time in the UK for a few years (boo-urns). I suppose I will have to go bother him at home in San Francisco instead.

The Dyson Airblade.
The Xlerator.
The Rest Of Them.

When I am Lord of the World, every single person associated with the design, specification, manufacture, sales, selection, procurement, distribution, supply, purchasing, fitting, and maintenance of The Rest Of Them will be shot, piled into a massive heap, and set alight. I will then use the heat from this fire to dry my hands.

The people related to the two named models of hand dryer will, meanwhile, be fêted as kings amongst men and given a nice present. Australia, maybe.

Boots, the U.K. pharmacy chain, comes clean about its goals.

Paul Bennett, professional standards director for Boots, told a committee of MPs that the pharmacy chain stocks such items for no other reason than that they are popular.

“There is certainly a consumer demand for these products,” he said. “I have no evidence to suggest they are efficacious.

“It is about consumer choice for us and a large number of our customers believe they are efficacious.”

“Hey, we’re not idiots, but consumers are, so you know, whatever!”

Interesting points here:

I did not know homeopathic treatments were licensed by the U.K. government and the National Health System (just like in France, where we all learn not to question them, ever);

This may not last as the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee looks into the effectiveness of such treatments, a move that could eventually save taxpayers millions of pounds;

Efficacious? Is that a real word?
